Guilect, The error pops up immediately with no window showing that I can discern. Other DirectX programs run properly. Now that you mention it, two other programs have stopped working. One is called "SciLab" (technical computing environment) and the other is called "Processing" (a new computer language used for graphics). I've only used them occasionally and I can't say which of the three stopped working first but it was probably B2D. Finally, no, I don't remember installing or uninstalling programs around the time of B2D going awry - simply because I can't remember exactly when the problem arose. It was like a couple of months ago and I just came back to it from time to time to see if I could figure out why it wasn’t working. Having made no progress, I thought I'd try the pros here.

It kinda sounds like your antivirus has quarantined a file.
Does this program run:
system.pause 1000 msgbox "hello"

u9,
I assume you meant to run that as a .vbs script? No, it does not run. It gives an error message stating "Object required: 'system'" I tried turning off my anti-virus protection temporarily but got the same message when I ran the script.

I've just noticed that you said some other programs have stopped working too & one of them was called 'Processing'. I've got that installed & it's strange that it would stop working as the only thing it depends on is Java.

u9's suggested program is a B2D program.
Perhaps re-installing "SciLab" would re-install the missing component that it and B2D needs.

I tried uninstalling Java and reinstalling the runtime. This didn't fix the problem with any of the programs - but made things worse. I now have a couple of other programs that will not work. Back to the drawing board.

I don't think the Java problem has anything to do with the B2D problem since B2D stopped working some time ago. What could possibly make it stop working?

Have you got a copy of dx8vb.dll installed on your computer?
It might be installed at the following location C:\Windows\System32.

u9 mentioned in an earlier post that your Anti-Virus software may have quarantined a file.
What Anti-Virus software are you using & has it alerted you to any suspicious files on your system recently?

Matthew,
I am using ESET. I checked its quarantine again and there are a couple of items (probably false positives) but definitely not related to B2D or system files.

Hmm, ESET is a very good Anti-Virus program so I don't think it could be a problem with that.
I should say that once before I had the same problem with Brutus2D that you're having but it just seemed to solve itself after I rebooted my computer.

Well, it only took about six weeks but I do have B2D working again. To make a (very) long story short, I ended up re-registering msscript.ocx and was actually a bit stunned when a B2D program actually ran without complaint. Thanks to everyone who made suggestions along the way.
