I expect a drawing area of 640x480. I've actually had windows larger than the resolution I was running at. So what? Everyone knows the secret MS code : CTRL + ALT + DEL

the programmer has no way of knowing the resolution of the users desktop (currently). And windows limits the actual canvas size to the size of the desktop. Afaik you cannot create windows larger then the desktop (i.e. larger canvas), and if you do the canvas gets truncated to the desktop size and borders go over the edge of the desktop.
