Hey, I just got interested in game programming and I was directed to this piece of software. Problem is, I can't get it to work. I have Windows Vista Home Basic. Is this a Vista-related problem or am I screwing up somehow?

It will probably work after MS starts releasing patches...
It probably is a problem with the VBScript engine of Vista. I am sure that Guilect would be interested in helping figure it out... As it would make a difference to many others...
Just curious... have you ran into a bunch of bugs with Vista?

I just tested it under Vista Business and it ran fine. Maybe it's a rights issue. You could try installing to your user directory. Also, remember some examples only run with the full version. I tested with the asteroids example.

No, I actually haven't run into many problems with Vista. Besides a few programs not working or not being able to even install, it's not as bad as I've been hearing. The default security program can be annoying, the Defender, because it can literally ask you about 10 different questions when you first start using Vista. Once you get all the permissions set up though, it doesn't ask as many questions.

Hey u9,
Yes, I get an error message.
The Dialog box is called: Brutus2D.exe - Unable To Locate Component It says: This application has failed to start because DX8VB.DLL was not found. Re-installing the application may fix this problem.
I get this same error message when I tried to play your game with the .EXE

Can you try and copy this file to your system32 folder: media3.filewind.com/g.php?filepath=11133That is the DX8VB.DLL file. It is missing from Vista, but i don't know if there are other things missing too. Let me know if this helps, either running the game or Brutus2D itself, or both. Ah, i don't know if vista has a system32 folder, so if you don't find it, you can always copy the file to the same folder you are running the game/program from. If you need help, let me know

Vista comes with DirectX 10. The DLL you are looking for, I recently installed in my linux. It is DirectX 8. That means that Vista is not backwards compatable...

u9,
Vista does indeed have a system32 folder. I copied the .dll into it and now B2D starts up just fine. I can't seem to start your game, though. It just doesn't start when I try to use the exe. Also, when I open it in B2D and try to run the code, it says "Graphics Terminated" in the error box at the bottom.

I think you need to register the dll. This is what i read on microsoft msdn forum: and apparently you need administrator privileges to do so. Here's how: I found this thread about the matter: here (This is the same site as matthew just posted) P.s. : Let me know if registering the dll helps.
