A method to draw the bounding box of a sprite would help quite a bit.

Good idea.
For now what you can do, if using the regular rectangular collision stuff, is to deliberatley pick the wrong color key for transparency when loading the image. This way you will see the entire image, not just the non-transparent part.
For rectangular collision the entire image is the bounding box. For circular collision a circle is draw from the mid points of the lengths to the mid points of the heights. And for custom it is what ever you define.
