I had used my computer. Went to shut down. A window popped up; "so and so" is not responding. I had a choice of 2 buttons I picked "End Now". "so and so" was stopped and Windows shut down seemingly fine.
Next day. Started up the PC, Windows starts to load. It gets about 20 seconds into the loading and reboots the machine. It gets about 20 seconds into the loading and reboots the machine. . . . I used Windows recovery console to use Fixboot, FixMRB, but no go. Ended up reformatting C: and re-installing Windows.
All in all not too bad a thing. A fresh install of Windows is nice after having accumulated a ton of junk in the registry and other places. I never install software* or store data to the C: drive just for this exact circumstance.
(* The one exception is MS VisualBasic, as it really does not give you the option to put it anyplace else.)
I still have not got around to re-installing MS VB yet.
Just wanted to remind all of you out there to back up anything you don't want to lose. You never know when your OS or your hard drive could refuse to function properly.

so true, so true Guilect. One time, many years ago I was working on my 3d Anubis animation project. I had 3 Anubis guarding the entrance door to this marble temple that led to the gates of the underworld where Seth dwells. Well, it was coming along fine and I only had 2 files of the program and in the same folder on my hard drive. For some reason, Windows malfunctioned or acted weird and kept shutting down and rebooting. So, rather than backup my work onto another drive. I just did a clean, defrag reboot. The problems went away but unfortunately, my 3 Anubis went back to the underworld I have learned my lesson very well, after that. Cause I have a 40 gig external back up hard drive and also I'm using some San Disk Cruzer flash drives. I'm using one flash drive with a capacity of 4 gigs. Their only 20 bucks and over at Radio Shack and Walmart too. cheers

There was a time when I made backups but I haven't done so for a long time. Anything that I create usually gets uploaded to my Wikispace or Website, if it's something like music I copy it to my MP3 player & if it's a really important program or document I'll print it out. I basically treat my computer like crap, if it does stop working after a few years I'll just buy a new one. ;D

Hi,
I love it " Window XP" to install. I am glad, if it crashes. Now I can show that I am a master for the window install. I need the whole day for installing XP. That is really funny and nice and lovely. I never make backups because I forget it. And that is my happiness. I am so proud of my forgetfulness. When i have installed the whole XP, then I have to go to a doctor. The Doc asks me, XP installs? I say yes ! The Doc says: ok 10 days Psychiatry for vacation.
Can I have more luck ? ;D

haha. I have a few other computers with Windows XP. And even an older one...a Compaq Presario and with Windows 98. This one has never crashed on me. The only controversial bad thing about it was this: I only had so much system ram...64 megabytes. And also a wimpy 1 gig hard drive. And with the stuff I already had on it. I had to decide whether to keep Might and Magic 6, which I was already 3/4ths the way thru playing it. Or delete it and install Fallout 2..which just came out at the time and that I bought. I didn't have any back up drives at the time. But I could afford one of those IOMega Zip Drives. I did buy one but it was for my first HP computer. I still have it and its in my closet. Oh yeah, I did have one of those external and fast floppy drives too.

Hi Cemetary cat, win98 was not crashed ? that is very soothing to hear. I plan to use it. Yesterday I got a copy thereof. You have so many Computers, are you a computer freak? A HD with 1 gigabyte, was not that in 1982 ? You must have a lot of time for all this stone age computer. I guess that you are a retired person. But after all, i would be glad if i would have some computers more. IOMega Zip Drives, such a thing like a Diskette? how many Megs could you store on it ? Recently I have read that you even need drivers for usb sticks, if you use win98 ! I think that we need for everything a driver. This old Operation System knows not the modern components anymore. Maybe it is better if I am waiting for windows 7. Peter

I am not retired yet. Got probably another good 20 to 30 years left before my earth suit retires or my tent folds. . But you never know, with the wear and tear of life. the second law of thermodynamics and of the curse. And of your own reaping and sowing too. I still have and use my old Maxtor external hard drive. 40 gigs on it. Its about 7 years old. I don't use USB sticks but again Sandisk Flash Drives. I love these little work horses. I now now have a Sandisk 1 Gig plugged in and also a 4 gig Micro Cruzer plugged in as well. I'm thinking of getting or asking Santa for one of those paperback USB hard drives too. There is one at Walmart that has 160 gigs and is only around 80 bucks. But I'm also wanting to get some kind of Nvidia 6200 3d graphics card. Either PCI or PCI express. I have 2 slots for PCI and one slot opened for PCI Express. Perhaps it would be just better to get a memory upgrade from 1 gig to 2 gigs. The memory is expandable to a total of 4 gigs. I think and will check to see if there is software out there where if you have readyBoost of a Flash Drive you can use the drive or some of the memory as system memory and in place of your virtual memory of your hard drive. cheers
