Yeah, interesting.
It reminds me of when I used to design sprites on my Amiga. ;D
The Amiga could use two different types of sprite, Hardware and Software.
Hardware sprites were restricted to a small size but Software sprites could be any size you wanted.
Quite often people would only use Hardware sprites as they were much faster for the computer to display.
If you needed to display a large sprite you just combined several Hardware sprites like in that Mario game.

mmm.... could it be, because they wanted to detect if you jumped on the baddie?
so that way it can detect where it collided perhaps....

Nooo I think it is clearly a hardware issue similar to the one on the Amiga. I always found it difficult to use the hardware sprites on the Amiga because there were some limitations, e.g. with colors, position on screen and stuff.
